3 Natural Protein Powders for Health-Savvy Athletes

For many years, athletes have consumed heavy protein right after a hard workout. Protein is used for the production of muscles and also used to manufacture hormones, enzymes, cellular messengers, nucleic acids and immune-system components. Without an adequate amount of protein, our muscles cannot heal as quickly which can lead to injury.

While solid food may arguably be the best way to get the amount of protein your diet requires, sometimes we need a quick fix to get in a lot of protein in a short time frame. Protein shakes are popular because they take only a few minutes to make and around 30 minutes to reach the muscle after ingestion. Solid food takes more time to digest and to break down.

Not all protein powders are created equal. In fact, some are not considered healthy due to their poorly-sourced ingredients, inclusion of bad sugars and GMOs. If you’re taking the time and spending the money to be healthy, you need to know what you’re consuming. You want to make sure you’re healthy from the inside out.

Here are 3 of the leading all-natural protein powders:

Xwerks Grow

This protein powder is made from pure New Zealand grass-fed whey isolate and naturally sweetened with zero artificial sugars. The protein is sourced from naturally raised New Zealand grass-fed cows, meaning no hormones, antibiotic or pesticides that can be passed on to you. Xwerks Grow is also loaded with essential amino acids.

Whey isolate means that their whey is “isolated” through micro filtration to almost totally pure protein with virtually no lactose, carbs or fats. Xwerks uses a zero ion exchange purifying process that helps preserve the biological activity of the protein and its micronutrients – the main benefits of grass-fed milk.

Years of testing and research on more than a dozen different plant-based protein sources led to the creation of this unique blend of ingredients that, when combined, scores a perfect 1.0 on the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS), which is the gold standard for protein for human nutrition.

PlantFusion is the only plant-based protein shake that compares to whey; enhanced with 4500mg of BCAAs and 3,350mg of glutamine. PlantFusion contains organic, sprouted quinoa and amaranth, yellow peas and globe artichoke.

While there are other protein powders on the market, these three are your best options for a healthy, all-natural shake. The last two are great if you are dairy intolerant. Personally, I have tested all three and on a taste factor they rank very high, though I was not a fan of the Vega One Chai. As a side note, Xwerks Chocolate Cream would be mighty tasty with some peanut butter.
